Saint Laurent Music Project : Daft Punk

While we’re waiting for the Daft Punk new “collaborative” album, Random Access Memories, that will be released on May 20th, we can get a glimpse of the two robots new costumes, designed by Hedi Slimane for Saint Laurent Paris, as a part of the Music Project. The slick sequined jackets fit perfectly with their metallic robot helmets… ! The collaboration between Daft Punk and Saint Laurent Paris actually seems to have started in October 2012 : Daft Punk made the soundtrack for their Spring 2013 defile (which is actually a remix of Junior Kimbrough).

Drawing Apparatus by Robert Howsare

Feeling uninspired? Why not break out the turntables, dust off those records, and create some optically dazzling elliptical renderings? Designer Robert Howsare has paved the way with his Drawing Apparatus, a homespun automaton consisting of two record players attached with wooden arms that join together to ink fantastic designs on paper. As Arbitare explained, “according to the variable length of the arm or the speed of the chosen record, the object ‘bleeds’ different patterns.”

Years by Bartholomäus Traubeck

Interesting project. I’m curious about the process between wood reading and the music that outputs.. in a not so cacophonic way.

A tree’s year rings are analysed for their strength, thickness and rate of growth. This data serves as basis for a generative process that outputs piano music. It is mapped to a scale which is again defined by the overall appearance of the wood (ranging from dark to light and from strong texture to light texture). The foundation for the music is certainly found in the defined ruleset of programming and hardware setup, but the data acquired from every tree interprets this ruleset very differently. – Bartholomäus Traubeck.

Fat Monk video by Rat vs. Possum, directed by Lucy McRae

I’ve been wanting to do a post on “body architect” Lucy McRae for quite a while after discovering her somewhat creepy metallic skin and safety pin clips that explore the body’s relationship with artificial skins made from found objects. McRae makes her directorial debut in this carefully choreographed music video for the Australian band Rat vs Possum.
